Our History

Wharton Dual Language Academy traces its roots back to 1929, when the original building was constructed and the school was named in honor of William H. Wharton (1802–1839)—an early Texas statesman, senator, and advocate for independence who arrived in Texas in 1831 and played a pivotal role in the Republic’s early political life.

Becoming a Dual Language Leader

In 2000, Wharton became one of Houston ISD’s first school-wide Dual Language Magnet Programs, pioneering an innovative 80/20 instructional model that integrates English and Spanish from pre-K through 8th grade. Over the years, the program has expanded to include middle school, further cementing Wharton’s reputation as a center of academic bilingual excellence.

2012 HISD Bond & Major Renovation

Voters approved a sweeping $1.89 billion bond package in November 2012, including significant funds aimed at renovating Wharton and expanding its capacity. Specifically, Wharton received a $35.6 million allocation to upgrade the 1929 building and add a new classroom wing, library, science lab, cafeteria, art room, gymnasium, and improved technology infrastructure—it was designed to serve up to 900 students.

Groundbreaking & New Building (2017–2018)

After a temporary relocation in 2016 to “Wharton Village” at Gregory-Lincoln Education Center, construction began in May 2017 with a festive groundbreaking ceremony featuring students, staff, and community members. By late 2018, the project was practically complete, preserving historical elements like the original façade while adding a modern three-story wing with labs, a gym, library, and courtyard.

In January 2019, students and faculty moved into the beautifully renovated and expanded campus, ushering in a new chapter featuring state-of-the-art educational environments.

Separate and Unique School Status

As of 2024, Wharton transitioned into a separate, unique magnet school, distinct from its former attendance boundary—a milestone recognizing its magnet status and autonomy.
