Dual Language Program

(PK–8)

Wharton is the only Pre-K through 8th grade Two-Way Dual Language campus in Houston ISD, offering an 80/20 Spanish Immersion model in the early years that gradually balances with English instruction as students advance through the grades. This program is designed for both native and non-native Spanish speakers and promotes biliteracy, bilingualism, and biculturalism through content-based language instruction.

Language Immersion Model

• No direct translation – Content is taught in the target language to promote authentic acquisition.

• Emphasizes oral and written communication, collaborative learning, and critical thinking.

• Builds comprehensible input by integrating students’ background knowledge with literacy and content learning.

This immersive, content-based approach develops confident speakers and readers in both Spanish and English while maintaining high academic standards across all content areas.

IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) 

Grades PK–5

Wharton has been an authorized International Baccalaureate World School since 2013. The IB Primary Years Programme is designed to develop the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world beyond.

• Supports a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging, and significant.

Middle School Program

(Grades 6–8)

Our middle school continues the Dual Language experience while preparing students for high school and beyond through a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum.

Middle School Highlights:

• Spanish Dual Language Magnet with academic instruction in both English and Spanish.

• High-level academic Spanish courses for all students, including AP Spanish.

• Advanced coursework opportunities such as Algebra I for high school credit.

• Continued focus on critical thinking, collaboration, and intercultural understanding.
